Lesson 1

Let's go all the way back to the beginning of time, when God made the earth and stars. He made plants and trees, and everything that lives on the earth. He made everything beautiful and it was safe.
On the sixth day of the week, God made land animals, and then He made man. The man's name was Adam. Adam did not start off as a baby, like people do today. God made a beautiful world for Adam to live in, with all kinds of plants, animals, trees, and even the things we see in outer space. Those things also help the earth to function properly. The sun is the exact distance it needs to be away from the earth. If it were any closer, the heat from the sun would burn everything up on earth. If it were any further away, the earth would be too cold for people and plants to live in.
Before anything was even made, God was already there. God is the creator and created everything that exists. No one created God. He is 'uncreated'. There was never a time when God did not exist.
God also made a woman for a companion for Adam. Not only did God create Adam, with all the nice things around him, but He also created a lady to be his wife! Now Adam and Eve were the first married couple!
The name of their home was 'The Garden of Eden'. God would come down and talk with them in the 'cool of the day'. I wonder what God said to them. What do you think?
After God finished His creation work, He said that His work was 'good'. There was no sickness yet. There were no wars. People were happy. They were able to talk to and listen to God. Wouldn't that be neat?
But things in the beautiful Garden did not stay pretty. In fact, as time went on, things became terrible. There was sickness and wars. People hated each other. What could have happened that brought all the difficulties about?
In the next lesson, we will find out what the problem was that caused all these difficulties to happen to people. How can something that was so beautiful become so ugly and disappointing? I will give you a clue; it had to do with a snake, a tree, and a lie. It all happened in the Garden of Eden too. Stay tuned!

For this week, you can follow the story in your Bible by reading Genesis, chapters 1 and 2. Genesis is the first book in the Bible, and the events that are recorded in the Bible really did happen.
